What do you specifically know that most accountants don't?

Most accountants have a broad understanding of sales tax, but I've spent years focused specifically on the challenges of multi-state compliance for growing businesses.

I understand how nexus, product taxability, sales channels, exemptions, and state-specific requirements all connect. The real challenge isn't knowing each rule individually. It's understanding how they work together and what they mean for a business in practice.

That's where my experience really comes into play. I can look at the full picture, identify where the biggest risks are, and help clients understand their options and make informed decisions about what to do next.

What's one type of client situation you've handled that you're proud of?

I'm especially proud of helping businesses untangle historical sales tax exposure after years of growth. These situations can feel overwhelming, particularly when obligations have accumulated across multiple states and there isn't one obvious answer for how to address them.

One client had been selling into multiple states for years but had only registered for sales tax in their home state. I completed a multi-year exposure analysis and helped them develop a measured compliance strategy using registrations, voluntary disclosure agreements, and other approaches based on their specific risk.

Rather than trying to fix everything at once, we prioritized where action mattered most and created a plan they could realistically work through over time. They went from worrying about what might happen if they were audited to understanding where they stood and what to do next. Fewer sleepless nights and a clear path toward compliance.

What specific topic areas do you consider your wheelhouse?

If I had to pick a few areas, I'd say multi-state sales tax strategy, nexus and exposure analysis, product taxability, and helping businesses understand how sales tax affects their broader business decisions.

Historical exposure is probably the area I find most interesting because there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution. The right approach can depend on whether nexus is physical or economic, how long the exposure existed, what products are being sold, the mix of marketplace, wholesale, and direct-to-consumer sales, and ultimately the client's goals and risk tolerance. I also help clients navigate sales tax audits, from responding to information requests to evaluating exposure and resolving issues that arise during the audit process.

What makes you an interesting/quirky/fun person?

I've always loved strategy games, which probably explains why I ended up in sales tax. Outside of work, you'll often find me playing Rummikub, Catan, or Risk with my family.

I like situations where there are a lot of variables, no perfect answer, and you have to think a few steps ahead. Apparently, whether I'm trying to take over the world in Risk or untangle a multi-state sales tax problem, that's my idea of fun.
